Man Assaults Another Inmate At Downstate Correctional Facility, Police Say

A 20-year-old inmate at the Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill is facing new charges after allegedly assaulting another inmate while in custody, state police said.

Following an investigation, New York State Police investigators determined that Brooklyn resident Akil Baptiste assaulted another inmate on Jan. 14 while he was still incarcerated, leading to a felony second-degree assault charge, officials announced on Monday.

Baptiste was arraigned in the Town of Fishkill Court and remanded back into the custody of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. He is due back in court on May 16 to answer the charge.
